Rebirthing the Heart and Soul Transition Town Group
You know what it`s like when you have an itch? You really have to scratch it. Well that has been my experience with the itch of a Heart and Soul group for the Transition Town Weymouth and Portland community. The itch became intense when I heard there had been an enquiry from an ordained inter faith minister as to whether the TT group in Weymouth had any interest in the “prayerful” side to it`s approach. As far as I recollect, these were not her words but that is how I came to think of her question.
Her name is Carol Lewis and she and I had a chin wag. We discovered that we could pool ideas and get together, from our friends and acquaintances, a bunch of folk that could give us ideas to rebirth this Heart and Soul for Transition Town Weymouth and Portland.
We gathered a list. Carol and myself, a retired nurse and midwife plus a “server of this planet, Jon Orell our Chair, Mark Blunden who is connected with the Chamber of Commerce, Mandy Storey who is involved in an holistic approach on a physical and spiritual plane and teaches meditation, Agatha Rodgers a counsellor having worked in the prison service and other areas, plus being a Shamanic teacher, Giovanna Lewis who has a great connection with the planet and it`s present struggles and is currently researching ways to change the banking system, lastly Peter Jadinge and Mairi Kershaw both involved with different lines in TTWP.
On 23rd January we had a meeting with this clutch of folk who had told me they had a “feel” for the aims of a support group known, in the Transition Town movement, as Heart and Soul. This group would be the under-pinning of the active work being so admirably done by the other factions involved here in Weymouth and Portland Transition Towns.
All present were very open and willing to share views on how this group could evolve and be of service to the others in our local TT organisation as well as to the towns of Weymouth and Portland.
It was also thought some guidance and inspiration might be sought and both myself and Mandy had heard of Sophy Banks at Totnes. Mandy is now in the process of contacting Sophy hoping she can come and give us a chat and some history of how to keep a H and S group alive and thriving.
So, we hope to keep this core group together and open up the space for others who wish to bring their energy to this subtle “prayerful/spiritual” addition to WPTT`s.
I am at present reading Joanna Macy`s “Active Hope” which I feel we can use to inspire us with it`s thoughts and useful exercises which we could employ.
The next step will be a get-together when Sophy can visit We have given her a provisional date of Saturday February 22nd and we await a reply.
Will keep all informed of how the “itch” is going.
From Maggie Tidball and the lovely people who came so willingly on 23rd.
